Challege your brain / 200W vs. 50W bulb
« on: September 03, 2009, 06:44:35 PM »
Two engineering students, Alan and Bob, living in neighbouring college rooms, decided to economise by connecting their ceiling lights in series to a DC supply. They agreed that each would pay equal shares of the electricity bill. However, both decided to try to get better lighting at the others expense. Alan installed a 200W bulb, while Bob installed a 50W bulb. Who got the best deal?

A toy consists of a plastic frog on a spring attached to a base.  The frog also has a rubber sucker underneath, concentric with the spring.  The frog is stuck to the base using the rubber sucker, compressing the spring.  Eventually the spring overcomes the suction of the rubber sucker and the frog jumps in the air.  If the frog weighs 10gm, and the spring requires a force of 0.1 newton per mm of compression and is compressed by 25mm, what is the maximum speed reached by the frog?

Challege your brain / Which of these two bridges would be stronger?
« on: September 03, 2009, 06:33:42 PM »
Imagine two bridges that are exactly alike except that every dimension of one bridge is twice the size of the other. The larger bridge is exactly two times longer, its structural members are exactly two times thicker, and so on. Which of the two bridges would be stronger, or is their strength the same?
