##### Resumes / Looking for a job? You can now post your resume on our website
« on: April 20, 2010, 01:36:33 AM »
If you are looking for a job in the engineering discipline, you can now post your resume on this forum for added visibility.
All you have to do is register for this forum and then post your resume under the respective forum, ie. civil engineering/careers/resumes.
Tips
• Make sure that you have a catchy subject and an equally informative message body.
• Feel free to get creative and include links and photos if you wish.

A link to your entry will appear on our homepage immediately after you post and will be stored in this forum indefinitely, or until you delete it. We are currently receiving about 1000 engineers everyday, so who knows who might be looking for a candidate like you.

Best of luck

##### Challege your brain / Calculate the velocity of water coming out of a double-entry pipe
« on: March 06, 2010, 11:43:09 PM »
If we know the volumetric flow rates of the water going into the two branches, then what would be the velocity of the water coming out?

What are some of the things that you as an engineer can do do better the state of our infrastructure?

##### Challege your brain / Determine the code to open the briefcase
« on: January 24, 2010, 08:18:36 PM »
Doug had forgotten the 5 digit code to his briefcase. However, he did remember five clues:

1. The fifth number plus the third number equals fourteen;
2. The fourth number is one more than the second number;
3. The first number is one less than twice the second number;
4. The second number plus the third number equals ten; and
5. The sum of all five numbers is 30.

What were the five numbers and in what order?

##### Technology / Is Facebook a purposeless time-waster or a revolutionary way of networking?
« on: October 19, 2009, 11:31:43 AM »
I recently joined Facebook to silence my friends' constant ridicules about not having a Facebook account. So far the site has been great tool in keeping in-touch with friends and family but I have been unimpressed by the constant useless activities, live feed, poking, etc. I can't understand why people feel that they have to broadcast every single aspect of their lives.
Facebook is a great tool but some of the activities a entirely useless. If the same effort was used to generate useful resources such as scrabble game apps, tech trivia etc,  I believe we would be nurturing the young minds who spend a good amount of time on the site.

Do agree with me that Facebook  a purposeless time-waster not  a revolutionary way of networking as some have argued?

##### Infrastructure / High Speed Rail: Shouldn't we be more agressive?
« on: October 01, 2009, 12:56:36 PM »
According to a recent article in the China Daily, China is “poised to become the world’s High Speed Rail leader.” They are set to build 42 new high speed lines spanning a total of 13,000 km over the next three years. And while our current administration is contemplating how to spend \$13B in high speed rail, China is investing \$300B in their high speed rail initiative by the year 2020. If a country as smart and as talented as China is blazing this trail, shouldn’t we be more aggressively following their lead?

##### Technology / Iphone or Blackberry?
« on: September 26, 2009, 12:25:06 AM »
What do you use and how do you like the gadget?
Which of the two is more suitable for the type of work engineers do?
Are there any useful apps that you would like to share?

##### The Economy / Have you lost your job? How are you surviving?
« on: September 26, 2009, 12:23:54 AM »
This economy is probably the worst most of us have witnessed in a long time.
If you have lost your job, what have been some of your experiences and how are you coping with the situation.

##### General Discussions / How much sleep do we really need?
« on: September 24, 2009, 11:12:10 AM »
Many years ago, people routinely slept eight to nine hours a night. Things have certainly changed for engineers since then with, the internet, Blackberrys, project deadlines, a declining economy, and ever-increasing stress, there simply aren't enough hours in the day for sleep.
So, how many hours of sleep are adequate for engineers?
What do you do to stay alert and focused the entire day?

##### LEED / Is LEED certification necessary for civil engineers?
« on: September 18, 2009, 04:11:01 PM »
Do you think it is necessary for civil engineers to become LEED accredited professionals (LEED AP)?
While LEED certification is perhaps the highest valued environmental accreditation and its importance cannot be undervalued in the coming years, we as engineers are led to ask the following questions,
• Can you design for sustainability without having LEED accreditation?
• Is this just another acronym to put on a business card?
• Or, as some suggest, is this a half hearted attempt by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) to exploit the demand for solutions to environmental issues and make some money along the way?

##### Design / Challenges of the design engineer
« on: September 15, 2009, 02:50:24 PM »
I once read an article by an engineer which pointed out that one of the major challenges that he had to overcome as an engineer was visualizing projects through the customer's eyes.
While it might sound simplistic because the client's scope might address all the requirements, I believe that having the ability to know your clients and see their requirements through their eyes would not only make you a consultant of choice but will also make you a better engineer.
Thus said, what are some of the challenges and how did you overcome them that you faced as an engineer.

##### Spreadsheets / Design of Deep Beam
« on: September 11, 2009, 01:52:25 AM »
This spreadsheet is for the design of deep beams. It includes the following design steps:
Design for area of steel for continuous/fixed deep beam - limit state design
Check for deep beam action, minimum thick.of beam to prevent buckling w.r.t span and depth
Design for area of steel for continuous/fixed deep beam - working stress design
Design for area of steel for continuous/fixed deep beam - working stress design
Minimum percentage of steel for liquid retaining structures (RCC member)

##### Educational / Online vs. on-campus learning?
« on: September 08, 2009, 11:52:48 AM »
There has been a proliferation of online engineering degree programs in the last decade or so. As the concept catches on, the question still lingers – whether an online program is better or an on-campus program is better.
While online learning certainly provides a viable cheap alternative to traditional learning, what are the long term benefits in comparison to in-class learning.
More importantly, which degree program provides you with better job prospects?

##### Challege your brain / 200W vs. 50W bulb
« on: September 03, 2009, 06:44:35 PM »
Two engineering students, Alan and Bob, living in neighbouring college rooms, decided to economise by connecting their ceiling lights in series to a DC supply. They agreed that each would pay equal shares of the electricity bill. However, both decided to try to get better lighting at the others expense. Alan installed a 200W bulb, while Bob installed a 50W bulb. Who got the best deal?
