Right or wrong, credentials and associations change how people perceive you. If you graduate from Harvard or Yale, you are forever labeled with that brand, provided opportunities others aren't, and given the benefit of the doubt your ENTIRE life. Why is human nature, therefore, different when it comes to graduates of top engineering schools?

Graduating from one of the top schools in engineering may only make a difference in the beginning of your career. After a decade or more out of school it is your contacts who make the bigger difference. Having a relative in a company you apply to is a bonus. But you still have to perform well or the advantage is lost.

I went to USC. And one nice thing is that it has opened up opportunities for me via the alumni association that other schools don't seem to share.

It's how i found my current job, and also how i'm able to keep a lot of contacts in the industry.

Obviously, i think that school is just part of the bigger picture though. You have to be able to carry yourself in a situation or the best education in the world won't much matter.
