It is often asked ‘what is power distribution’? Power distribution is the delivery of electricity to an end user in the final stage. In the current day and age, the primary circuit leaves the sub station and will then reach the meter socket of the end user. The electricity will vary from 2300 volts all the way up to 35,000 volts dependant on the load, distance and standard utility practice- source -http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Power_distribution

A substation will have a transformer which will feed distribution cables, reducing the voltage as the electricity passes through. The conductors which distributed can often be seen on over head pole lines, which often run through the UK countryside, or, in more busy areas where this is not possible, the cables will be buried underground.

Varying loads are required dependant on the end user. A home owner will not require the same amount of electricity as an area where industrial activity is rife. In built up busy areas, a ‘three-phase’ system is used to meet the varying demands of the consumer. This is different to power distribution in rural areas where a ‘single-phase’ system is installed as this is usually the most economical solution as three-phase power is not required for the amount of customers.

Most of the time, it is only large end users who will take a feed of electricity straight from distribution voltages, whereas most customers will have a transformer, reducing the voltage to a low voltage which is commonly used by interior wiring systems or lighting systems. The transformer itself will be set into the ground or possibly pole mounted dependant on the area where the transformer is going.

In more abstract, rural areas, the transformer is likely to be mounted onto a pole, serving only one end user, completely the opposite to more densely populated areas where a number of consumers may be connected.

In very dense city areas, a secondary network may be formed with many transformers feeding into a common bus at the utilization voltage. Each customer has an “electrical service” or “service drop” connection and a meter for billing. (Some very small loads, such as yard lights, may be too small to meter and so are charged only a monthly rate- source-http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Power_distribution

It is likely that a customer’s system will be connected to the ground, this will limit any high voltage that may occur should a failure occur in the distribution transformer or if the high voltage conductors fall on the low voltage conductors.

Stray voltage problems can occur due to the multiple connections between the customer ground and the utility ground connections. This is particularly dangerous should this happen where people have swimming pools or other areas where an electrical current poses a serious safety threat.

SANTA CLARA, CALIF — Santa Clara University’s School of Engineering is now offering a Renewable Energy Certificate for engineering graduate students. The certificate helps engineers in the semiconductor field prepare for one of the fastest growing sectors in world – alternative energy.

“For the first time, Santa Clara University is offering that opportunity to students with the help of our brilliant and talented faculty.”

The certificate helps refresh the skill set of experienced engineers/professionals looking to enter the expanding alternative energy sector. It also expresses SCU’s commitment to sustainability and environmental justice. From a community perspective, it’s an important program that actively supports economic recovery in our region and responds to needs in this sector for a well-prepared work force.

“As demand for alternative energy grows, so will the need for highly qualified engineers with hands on experience in designing engineering systems that use wind, solar, and geothermal heat,” says Godfrey Mungal, Dean of the School of Engineering. “For the first time, Santa Clara University is offering that opportunity to students with the help of our brilliant and talented faculty.”

Plans are also in place to add a Masters degree in Sustainable Energy within the School of Engineering starting in the 2011-12 academic year.

The certificate program consists of eight courses that can be taken in a calendar year. Some of those courses are Alternate Energy, Power System, Biofuels Engineering, Introduction to the Smart Grid and Energy Management.

The School of Engineering will be holding an information session on Tuesday, September 14 at noon in the Multi-Purpose Room at Bannan Engineering Labs Building. More than 60 students have expressed interested in learning more about the certificate.

Bettina Weiss, executive director of SEMI PV Group, will also join the session to discuss the photovoltaic market and trends in the U.S. The organization is a special interest group that serves the photovoltaic supply chain.

Members of the media are invited to attend, at which time faculty and students will be available for interviews. Plenty of visuals are also available, such as SCU’s 2007 and 2009 Solar Decathlon homes (100 percent solar-powered) and campus facilities that utilize renewable energy, sustainable materials, and energy-efficient products.

Today’s topic is an interesting one, and depends largely on personal preference. It’s something that comes up for engineers every day: Be decent at many things, or be the absolute end-all-be-all expert in one thing? Some might respond with, “Well, how about being an expert at everything?”

Aside: It sounds funny, but this should probably be the goal for every engineer. I got great advice from my first manager: create a skill matrix. It was essentially an organized goal table consisting of career goals, skills, techniques, subject matter to learn, etc. that I wanted to accomplish. Being an expert in all of them is optimal, but time and job constraints often prove this difficult.

When it comes to the question at hand, many times engineers do not have much choice. Management will often make that choice for the engineer when they prioritize staff time and resources. But, let’s assume that there is a degree of freedom and the engineer can choose which-tech skills and/or design techniques on which he can focus. What should be in the engineer’s best interest for career advancement and job security? There are advantages and disadvantages to a broader skill set vs. a more focused one.

Jack of all Trades

The advantages to being good across many job functions are tied to versatility. Frankly, the company can use you more ways, and this can be very advantageous during times of change at the workplace. There are more subtle advantages, too. With a more broad skill set, the engineer tends to communicate across multiple design groups. The engineer also proves to be more resourceful, finding answers on his own without the help of others. These skills translate VERY well to management. In fact, one could claim that technical managers are the kings of being good at many things (and hopefully experts in a few). Another advantage to working across groups are the personal connections. Knowing more people in the industry, and working on design successes together, always bodes well for future job prospects.

Domain Expert

The advantages to being an expert at one job function are tied to indispensability. Engineers in this mode often can not be replaced within the company. This can also be a valuable position to be in during company changes. If no one else has the technical expertise to handle a specific design, the expert skills are invaluable to job security. Often, these engineers have an increased sense of ownership or pride over designs, as their contributions are clearly vital to the success of the company. The increased focus and concentration that the engineer can apply to one section of the design is preferred by some as well. By not switching topics, starting new design flows with other groups, or reviewing others’ work, the engineer can really hone his skills to an expert level. Just as being versatile helps with connections, specific expertise can be an immediate job creator when other companies look for this targeted skill set.

Obviously, engineers would like to be experts across the board. Throughout our careers, I do think we should strive for this. But, with stringent time constraints placed by our corporate bosses to push-to-market and make profit, it often proves difficult to either a) branch out and learn something new, or b) focus as intently on possible on one function and become the expert.

In your experience, which is better: Expert in one thing, or good at many things? Why?

Degree Programs

In an associate program, the courses cover the fundamental aspects of the engineering subject. It is generally limited to an introduction to the basic aspects of the subject. The degree can be obtained by attending general academic classes for two years. The curriculum for an online bachelor’s degree comprises of a combination of intensive engineering courses and basic academic courses for four years. On the other hand, graduate certificate programs aid in honing the skills in niche areas. They are more specialized in nature and depending on the program chosen, will cover areas such as creation or implementation of improved systems. The duration of these programs is 18 months or longer. A master’s degree program can last for two to three years and offers advanced courses in the chosen subject area.

With the advances in technology, it has become significantly easier to obtain degrees that will help in enhancing your career. With many more colleges beginning to offer online degree programs, the challenge for students becomes centered on which college and program to go with. Before you embark on a quest of the right online degree program, it will be a good idea to note the following,

Accreditation – One of the most important aspects you should know before you enroll yourself in an online degree programs is the accreditation of the school and the program. It will be a disastrous waste of your time and money if you pursued a degree from a school that is not accredited. It may also be wise to check how long the school has been offering online degrees. If the school has been offering these programs for a considerable period of time, chances are that the trial and error period is complete. The age of the online program will be a clear indication of the experience of the institution in educating students through an online program.

Teacher-to-student ratio - Check for the professor to student ratio. It is important that the professor has enough time to spend with you to impart the in-depth knowledge, through emails or telephone conversations. A teacher-student ratio of 1:20 is the norm for online programs. Anything higher than that might leave you at a disadvantage.

Cost - Online engineering programs cost less than traditional classroom programs. Apart from the fees, the living expenses are completely eliminated. All other ongoing expenses are also reduced since you can take the classes from anywhere.

It is becoming more obvious that online engineering programs are here to stay. They have replaced the erstwhile distance education or correspondence programs. The depth of knowledge and the speed of response has dramatically increased with the online programs in comparison to the traditional correspondence programs. With time gaining more and more importance, online engineering programs will be taken up by many who wish to build a career in engineering. While the long term benefits in comparison to in-class learning are inconclusive at this time, we can at least ascertain that at the very least, online learning provides a viable cheap alternative to traditional learning. Or what do you think? Join the active discussion on this topic.

Analytical writing

According to the GRE Board, analytical writing measures your ability to do the following,

articulate complex ideas clearly and effectively,

examine claims and accompanying evidence,

support ideas with relevant reasons and examples,

sustain a well-focused, coherent discussion [and]

control the elements of standard written English.

There are two sections in the analytical section of the GRE. The first is the issue essay and the second is the argument essay.

(1) Issue Essay

The issue essay requires you to present your perspective on an issue. For this you will be given two essay topics, usually a sentence or paragraph detailing a topic or an argument on a particular subject. You will then be required to take one of these topics and use them as the basis of your writing. You will have 45 minutes to come up with a compelling argument essay which details your own views on the topic presented to you. Realize that you do not have to agree with the provided statement but you will be judged based on how well you support your selected view with statements and relevant examples.

Examples of statements that would be provided to you:

The invention of gun powder was the single most destructive achievement in history

The main purpose of a college education should be to prepare oneself for a specific career

The drawbacks to the use of nuclear power mean that it is not a long-term solution to the problem of meeting ever-increasing energy needs.

(2) Argument essay

The second part of the analytical essay is the argument essay which requires you to argue a certain point. Here you will be provided with a statement and you will have 30 minutes to write an essay which analyzes the argument’s reasoning.

Both essay questions are scored in a similar fashion through holistic scoring, whereby your essays will be assigned a single number between 0 and 6 by two human scorers. Your final score will be the average of the two scores. Holistic scoring emphasizes the interrelation of various thinking and writing qualities in an essay, such as content organization and syntax.

Tips on how to tackle the analytical writing section

Before you start writing, analyze and take the argument apart by identifying the topic, scope, assumptions, facts and the conclusions brought forward.

Write down the points you will be making. For the issue essay, it might be a good idea to write down the pros and cons and go with whichever ones that carry the most weight.

Organize your Essay – Figure out what your opening, mid and conclusion sections will include. This provides you with an opportunity to come up with clever transitions to your arguments. Remember to always lead with your best arguments.

Write your essay – Remember that you will be graded on the quality of your writing and how well you portray your understanding of the argument.

Proof read – It is usually a good idea to make sure that you allocate some time to proof reading your work. Go through your essay to make sure that your syntax, grammar and vocabulary is properly used and in the right context. This is also a good time to recheck the spelling and the placement of colons, hyphens and commas.

The Graduate Record Examination (GRE) is a computer based test usually required for entry into most graduate engineering institutions. There are two types of GRE test, the general and the subject test. The GRE® General Test measures verbal reasoning, quantitative reasoning, critical thinking and analytical writing skills that are not related to any specific field of study. The GRE, like most tests is based on psychometrics, the peculiar science concerned with creating standardized tests. This means that the same concepts are tested over and over and the scores create a bell curve, whereby a group of test takers will do very well, some poorly, while the overwhelming majority will be somewhere in the middle. This article attempts to highlight several important facts about the test and provides you with tips on how to successfully tackle the test and be one of the ones who do very well.

How the GRE is scored

The analytical writing section is scored on a scale of 0-6 in half-point increase. The Verbal and Quantitative sections each yield a scaled score within a range of 200 and 800. However, you do not receive the exact score, you only get a percentile rank, which places your performance relative to those of a large sample population of other GRE takers.

How to study effectively

Just like any other test out there, you can only pass the GRE if you have sufficiently studied and are adequately prepared for the test. For first time test takers, it is advisable that you buy a book which will provide you with further insight into the test and also provide you with sample problems. Depending on the amount of time you have before the test, it would also be a good idea to handle an entire (web-based) test and get the feel for how the real thing will be.

How the GRE is structured

First, it is a good idea to realize how the GRE is structured. The GRE general exam consists of three scored sections, each with different times allocated for completion

Section

Time

Questions

Verbal Reasoning

30 minutes

30 multiple-choice

Quantitative Reasoning

45 minutes

28 multiple-choice

Analytical writing

75 Minutes

2 Essay Prompts

As described below, each of the different sections have their own unique rules and strategies. The list below details each of the sections and also provides tips on how to successfully tackle each of these sections.

There has been a proliferation of online engineering degree programs in the last decade or so. As the concept catches on, the question still lingers – whether an online program is better or an on-campus program is better. Both programs have their respective advantages and disadvantages.

If you considering going back to school, if will be a good idea to consider all factors before choosing an option to obtain a degree. This guide attempts to point out some advantages and disadvantages of both programs in an attempt to highlight what is best and worst in each of them.

Accessibility

One of the biggest considerations for students is accessibility. Online education does not require commutation or living in another city. The courses can be taken up from home or office and require no travel. While travel or living on the campus may be an issue if you take admission in a school away from home, on-campus programs offer more work opportunities and internships.

Self-discipline

Lots of self-discipline is required to complete an online program. When you are on-campus, it is easier to follow the routine and fall into the groove. In an online program, you are encouraged to think independently and later this habit becomes an asset to you. The discipline required to schedule your time for study and other existing commitments could however become very demanding.

Flexibility

Online courses are more flexible compared to on-campus programs. This is beneficial if you are working and cannot manage to stick to one particular schedule. You can attend online programs from anywhere as long as you have access to the Internet. You can even repeat a tutorial if you have not understood the concept fully. Flexibility that the online program offers is not part of the on-campus programs. The timing is fixed and you have to abide by them.

Cost

Cost of the program is an important consideration for many. An online program costs lesser than an on-campus program. This is primarily because you are not enjoying any of the infrastructure benefits of the school. The tuition fees for online programs is also considerably lesser. The living expenses and all other ongoing expenses are either eliminated or drastically reduced in an online program. Online programs are undoubtedly more cost effective than on-campus programs.

Socializing

The biggest advantage of on-campus programs is that it allows you to socialize and learn in a group. There will be interaction which is live and in person. Lot of networking happens on the campus. You make friends and contacts at a school that can last for a lifetime. Access to all campus facilities like library is another great advantage. Most campuses have other facilities like gym, stadium, swimming pool and theatres, which can be utilized by students.

Job Opportunities

The job opportunities may differ depending on what program you have chosen to obtain a degree in. Some companies give a preference to on-campus degrees. Most campuses also have industry collaboration wherein placement opportunities are better for students. Though the concept of online education is gaining momentum, it may still take a while for employers to view both online and on-campus degrees at par.

While there are advantages and disadvantages to both modes of education, what you choose is largely dependent on what you want. A campus program is better for someone who is not self motivated and lacks self-discipline. On the other hand, an online program is better for someone who wants to work as well as study.

Few classes in college prepare seniors on how to transition from college to the workforce. Given the stark contrasts between these two environments, we believe it is highly appropriate to have a guide on how to conduct yourself and interact with engineering professionals.

This article focuses on some issues that I am well aware of through personal experiences and those shared with me by my former classmates. Understanding and being aware of these points and being prepared for them should help you make a smoother transition into the engineering workforce.

Time-Management

Unlike college, you are now being paid for your time. For this reason, your employer will require you to dedicate 100% of yourself to the company during the time you are scheduled to work. You should also realize that some jobs will require you to work more hours that the regular 40-hour-weeks, usually without any sort of compensation.

One of the first things you should look into when you start with a new company is to figure out how you will manage the work-life balance and make your employer aware of which comprises you are willing to make and which ones you are not.
Another time-related harsh reality is free time and vacation time. In college, you get used to taking long weekends away from campus — on top of extremely long winter and summer breaks. Most colleges also have mid-semester breaks. Unfortunately, most employers are not that generous with time off. You may be lucky to get two weeks of vacation in your first job – but even with those two weeks, because you are one of the newest employees, you may not have much choice as to when you can take your vacation.

Professionalism

Everyone knows that a certain amount of college is a rite of passage, a time to try different things, be a little crazy or irresponsible. In college, acting unprofessional might result in a bad grade or a lecture from an administrator or professor; in the workplace, acting unprofessionally can get you fired.

Deadlines

Deadlines are critical, much more so than in college. Whereas you might have been able to convince your professor into giving you an extension, you’ll find in most fast-paced business environments, missing deadlines is unacceptable.

Teamwork

It is almost certain that you will be working as part of team in your first years of employment. With so many personality styles, communication modalities and dysfunctions, you will have to learn how to be an effective team player especially if you are in a subordinate role. As a new engineer it will be a good idea to take the time to listen and ask questions. Never assume.

Age groups

Unlike college, you will be among people from different age groups. Although you may share an excellent rapport with most of them, it is important that you are always polite and cordial to everyone. Good interpersonal relationships at workplace are crucial for creating a stress-free work environment.

Stress Management

Stress management starts with identifying the sources of stress in your life. Your true sources of stress aren’t always obvious, and it’s all too easy to overlook your own stress-inducing thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. Sure, you may know that you’re constantly worried about work deadlines. Every time you feel as if you are stressed step back and ask yourself the following question.

What is causing me the stress?

How can I do this differently?

Can I outsource that stressful task to someone more experience?

Dealing With a Difficult Boss

Dealing with a difficult boss can be very intimidating, as your relationship with them may make or break your career. If your boss is not too happy with your work, make a sincere attempt to evaluate your work performance. However, if you feel that you are doing your best, then it may be time to reassess your suitability for your current position, or to move on and find a new job.

Some other issues, while not related directly to work might influence how effective you are as an employee. These include,

Balancing work demands with family/friends/personal life

Personal finance issues and budgeting

Buying your first home

Because books cannot be taken into the FE exam rooms, the NCEES provides a copy of the FE Supplied-Reference Handbook at the exam site, which is to be returned at the end of the exam. This is the only reference you will have during the exam.

The Reference Handbook contains only reference formulas and tables; no example questions are included. It is not designed to assist in all parts of the FE exam. For example, some of the basic theories, conversions, formulas, and definitions that you are expected to know have not been included.

You can obtain a Reference Handbook in advance of the exam for review, but the copy you purchase in advance cannot be brought to the exam. Some licensing boards furnish their applicants with a Reference Handbook that has been recycled from a previous administration. These recycled copies may or may not be the version used for the next exam administration.

The Test

The exam is eight hours long altogether, split into two four-hour sessions with a 30 minute lunch break in between. Typically the morning session begins at 7:15 am, however, one hour passes between when time is called for the morning session to end until admission starts for the afternoon session.

Morning session

The morning session is a 120-question general exam for which all examinees must sit, while the afternoon session consists of 60 questions and is more discipline-oriented.

Afternoon session

For the second half, examinees choose one of the following seven tests: chemical engineering, civil engineering, environmental engineering, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, industrial engineering, or general engineering (similar in content to the morning exam, but far more detailed). The choice does not have to be made in advance, but rather on the day of the test.

The topics covered by the general exam are covered in the courses taken by engineering undergraduates, and include the following,

Mathematics | Chemistry | Computers | Statics | Dynamics | Strength of materials | Material science | Electrical circuits | Thermodynamics | Fluid mechanics | Engineering economics | Engineering Management Ethics |

Environmental Engineering | Biology (Afternoon only; general discipline) |

Those who pass the exam are designated Engineer In Training or given an equivalent designation, such as Engineer Intern, by their state’s licensure board for engineers, and are partway through the certification process. After completing an apprenticeship (the length of which is set by state law and based on the type of degree received) an EIT may qualify to take the Professional Engineer (PE) exam. Certification is awarded upon successful completion of the PE exam. The standard time of apprenticeship under a Professional Engineer is 5 years of work experience for graduates of an ABET-accredited engineering program.

For more on the EI exam, join several active discussions on the topic.
